|
U-Bolt Type Chainplates are designed for use with Upset Toggle Turnbuckles, which have a
U-shaped strap at the bottom. They pass directly through the deck and an Angle Bracket
or Tie-rod Block, and are secured with nuts on the lower side. Angle Brackets are normally
bolted to a bulkhead, units with Tie-rod Blocks generally use a rod, or cable,
to transmit stresses to a lower load bearing point.
U-Bolt Type Chainplates were rare in North American production boats (as far as we can
remember, used only on the O'Day 20 and 22), until the advent of the
Navtec U-Bolt Chainplate System.
This System allowed for the installation of Chainplates virtually anywhere on deck, without regard
for bulkhead placement, by utilizing a tie-rod arrangement, which transmitted loads
to off-center locations, or, frequently out-of-view, structural members in the floor pan. Navtec U-Bolt Chainplates start at 3/8" diameter for boats in the 30' (9M) range. They were commonly used on a variety of boats including Bristol, Cal, Caliber, C&C, Ericson, O'Day, Santa Cruz, Southern Cross, the Hobie 33, and others. All U-Bolt Type Chainplates are listed below by the diameter of the U-Bolt threads. |

| 1/4" U-Bolt Chainplates | ||
|
1/4" U-Bolt Chainplate Assembly: CP UB-O22X: Special 1/4" U-Bolt Chainplate Assembly as used on early O'Day 20's and 22's. This item is no longer available, having been replaced by the stronger CP UB-O22, below, after a number of early failures. Measurements are identical except that the new-style U-Bolt is made from heavier 5/16" stock.

5/16" U-Bolt Chainplate Assembly: CP UB-O22:
Special 5/16" U-Bolt Chainplate Assembly as used on later O'Day 22's. This item is identical to the original 1/4" CP UB-O22X, except that U-Bolt is made from heavier stock. Special U-Bolt Shroud Chainplate is formed from 5/16" rod on 1 3/4" centers, with a welded deck plate. Bolts extend 1 1/2" below deck surface and are secured with locknuts (included). This item was used with (2) SS Angle Brackets, CP UB-O22AB, below. As used on O'Day 20, 22 and Cal 22.

5/16" U-Bolt Chainplate - Angle Bracket: CP UB-O22AB:
Designed for use with CP UB-O22 centered on a 1/2" Bulkhead, SS Angle Brackets (2) are bolted together through Bulkhead to secure the lower end of U-Bolt Shroud Chainplate. Angle Bracket is 2 7/8" (max.) long x 3/4" wide and fastens to Bulkhead w/ (2) 1/4" bolts on 1" centers. Upper leg has 5/16" hole for U-Bolt. As used on O'Day 20 and 22.

Navtec U-Bolt Chainplates The Navtec U-Bolt Chainplate System allows for the installation of a Chainplate virtually anywhere on deck, without regard for bulkhead placement, by utilizing a tie-rod arrangement, which transmits loads to off-center locations, or, frequently out-of-view, structural members in the floor pan. Original forged U-Bolts exhibited a propensity for stress-crack corrosion, later machined versions greatly reduced this likelihood. For any non-replacement applications, please consult our Engineering Department for recommendations. |

3/8" Navtec U-Bolt Chainplate Assembly: Nav UBA-6S-2:
Navtec 3/8" U-Bolt Chainplate Assembly bolts through Deck to special Tie-rod Block which accepts SS tie-rod at a specific angle. Formed, flattened SS U-Bolt has 3/8" thread with 1 5/8" between centers, and extends 2" below deck surface. Note that some units were produced extending only 1 3/4" below deck, these are no longer stocked. Assembly includes U-Bolt with SS Top and bottom plates, lock washers and nuts. All components in this Assembly are Type 316 SS. As used on a variety of boats including Bristol, Cal 28, C&C LF 38, Ericson, O'Day 30, the Hobie 33, and others.
