Modern Bowsprit Poles are used to extend the tack forward on asymmetric Spinnakers,
Gennakers, and Code Zero sails, most are extendable, allowing for a range of tack positions.
Many newer 'racing' boats are equipped with them from the factory, and have built in receptacles and
extension mechanisms for them. A large variety of Deck-mount Bowsprit Pole Assemblies have followed,
allowing their use on older Boats. Many modern Catamarans have a fixed, non-retractable Pole for
use with a Code Zero furler.
These are Not to be confused with Traditional Bowsprits which are permanent Spars, an integral part of the Rig, used to extend the attachment point of the Forestay or Headstay beyond the length of the Hull. As such, and under constant tension, they require a permanent opposing Bobstay and sometimes, Whisker Stays. Parts for tubular Bowsprits are listed here. Parts for both are listed here. Aluminum Tubes are (mostly) Standard Imperial and Metric Tube, Parts for them are sized by the Aluminum Tube OD. Carbon Tubes are commonly built on mandrels made from Standard Aluminum Tube and are measured by the Carbon Tube ID. |
