Schaefer Rope Clutches Schaefer Rope Clutches (line stoppers) have been produced in 2 different designs, each was produced in 2 different sizes.* Schaefer's original First generation (Type 1) unit, introduced in 1977, had stainless steel sides, and vertically mounted aluminum cams with SS rod handles screwed into them. Their 2nd generation stopper (Type 2), known as the E.G.R. (Easy Grip & Release), was introduced in 1983. It featured all aluminum (black anodized) construction, except for SS bolts and springs. Schaefer has had no entrants in the rope clutch/stopper market since that time. *This does not include other variations of horizontally mounted First generation
stoppers (mostly on Circuit boats), or the famous imported (German) Aardvark stopper
