Schaefer Type 1 (Stainless Steel) Rope Clutches Their original First generation unit, introduced in 1977, had stainless steel sides, and vertically mounted aluminum cams with SS rod handles screwed into them. Originally these handles had black plastic tips on them. These were amongst the first commercially available stoppers anywhere, and at the time took over the market. These units came in 2 sizes: the smaller handled line 1/4"-3/8", the larger 3/8"-5/8". Both sizes were commonly available as single units, or in banks of two or three, and available on a semi-custom basis, in banks of up to 10! Additionally, both sizes were produced as flat-mounted (horizontal) singles, primarily for use as Spinnaker Halyard Stoppers mounted on the mast, and because of mounting variations, came in Port & Starboard versions. See Spinnaker Halyard Stoppers. All of these units, while they did an excellent job of 'stopping' the line, did not allow for easy release under great loads. Under these circumstances it was often necessary to take the load off of the stopper by putting the line on a winch before it could be released. For this reason (it is difficult to release by accident), they are still popular with many distance racers and cruisers today. v use rh cA62-085r&s50-012r

from 1/4"-3/8" (6-10mm) diameter. Attaches to Deck with (4) #10 (3/16" or 5mm) RH screws on 1
3/8" (fore and aft) x 1 5/8" (athwartships) centers. Base is (maximum) 2" long x 2 1/4" wide.
Unit is (maximum) 2 1/2" high (not including handle).
Suitable for most applications on boats to 28' LOA.

Attaches to Deck with (4) #10 (3/16" or 5mm) RH screws on 1 3/8" (fore and aft) x 2 3/16" (athwartships) centers. Base is (maximum) 2" long x 2 13/16" wide. Unit is (maximum) 2 1/2" high (not including handle). Suitable for most applications on boats to 28' LOA.
